Connection and human interaction-Why AI is a tool and we humans must be at the heart and centre of writing . . . and reading.

March 2025 Edition

As the AI world moves through the hype phase to the ‘real use’ phase it’s a great time to think about what this means for writers and readers. As I’ve noted before ‘we humans’ have to own or reclaim our agency in relation to the writing of books and content. We need approach AI as providing (some) useful tools to aid us in our writing and book marketing, not to substitute us. And we need to take ownership of what we ask it and how we use it.

Never lose sight that our superpower is that we’re human, we thrive from connection and building relationships NOT transactions. Sure, in the book business we all want to sell more books, but for most of us, there’s a bigger purpose and intent – to help others through our knowledge, insights or experiences. In this way other people can learn, gain support or comfort knowing they are not alone, grow or even change.

Many of us want to work with people we respect and admire and /or genuinely want to help grow and learn. We do this through writing and self publishing our book and then taking it out into the world to share it with as many people as possible.

What we’re really doing is connecting, seeking out human interaction – questions, feedback, new ideas, different ways of looking at things, helping people. We’re creating the opportunity for new relationships and deepening existing ones.

Your book sales can be measured – they’re a transaction, but relationships are felt.

And this is why AI can’t replace humans. It doesn’t feel, have purpose, seek connection. AI tools can help us with many tasks in the writing and book marketing process but many just add another layer of process rather than create efficiencies. Knowing what AI tools for what ‘job’ you want done takes time and effort.

Be conscious about how, when and what you do with your book writing time and your purpose.

I love this quote I read the other day: You can borrow a book, but you get to keep the ideas.

5 things to know

1. Writer’s Block. We all get it. I ‘got it’ over the weekend. I am on deadline for a manuscript for March 14. So, what did I do on Sunday morning instead of writing? I mowed the lawn and then . . .  preserved some plums! Now, I am not a known preserving person but the idea appealed. Well what appealed was that I ‘had’ to preserve them therefore writing HAD to wait. When you get writer’s block try one of these three things. 1. Get up and go for a walk, garden or simply get outside for 15 minutes. 2. Try writing a different chapter to reset. 3. Eat some chocolate, have a cup of tea/coffee and relax for 1 minutes, then get back into it.

2. Cover design. Whoever said ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ was wrong. Book covers (front and back) are a critical part of your book marketing and visibility. Spend the time and some money on an eye-catching book cover. Some tips though. Think about the title and the sub-title. They work together to ‘explain’ your book to potential readers. AND if you are going to have an image (photo or illustration) this has to work in with the title and sub title as well. Want some feedback on your book cover? Email me [email protected]

3. OpenAI has recently removed certain content warnings from ChatGPT, a move that has raised concerns among users and experts. Previously, ChatGPT would display warnings when generating potentially sensitive or controversial content, alerting users to the nature of the information provided. The removal of these warnings has led to discussions about the balance between user autonomy and the ethical responsibility of AI developers to prevent the dissemination of harmful or misleading information.

4. Perplexity just now launched their own Deep Research! Pro subscribers get unlimited access while free users get a limited number of queries per day. Research Process:

- Performs iterative searches and document analysis
- Refines research plans dynamically as it learns more about the topic
- Synthesizes findings into comprehensive reports
- Completes most research tasks in under 3 minutes

5. Google has introduced a new feature in its Gemini AI chatbot that adds “receipts” to conversations, providing more transparency into how the AI generates responses. This update allows users to see citations and links to sources Gemini used when generating its answers, helping to verify information and reduce concerns about AI hallucinations. The feature aims to make AI interactions more trustworthy by giving users direct access to supporting evidence.
