The business of self publishing-how to make it work for you.
December 2024 Edition
As a business owner, consultant, director or entrepreneur writing and publishing a book is probably on the list of things you want to do/achieve. Of course, there’s now a range of ways you can do this, self-publishing being one of them. But writing your book is only the first of several steps to achieving the success you want with your book.
Done right, your business book can be smart business for you. It can help you grow your business, your thought leadership, brand, visibility AND make money. Done wrong, it’s a costly exercise that take up a lot of time and doesn’t achieve any of your goals.
So, what are the 9 things you have to do to ensure your business book is a GREAT business investment and sell thousands of copies? I cover these below and share some links to specific articles I’ve written on some of these topics.
As a Virgo I am big on planning and consistent execution. As a business book writer (I’ve completed 5 manuscripts this year) and book coach I know a thing or two about writing, self publishing and marketing and how to make it ALL happen and who and what to avoid.
Lastly, I wish everyone a safe and happy Festive Season and start to 2025. It’s a wild world out there so I choose to focus on the things I can have an impact on, including working with people who are passionate about what they do and want to share it to help people.
1. Leverage your book content. Whether you have published a book or are about to start, you can and should leverage your book content. Your book content can be repurposed into Articles, Blogs, Podcasts, Courses, Speaking topics, Digital books (for promotions) and more. Once you have published your book it can be repurposed into separate chapters and used as Lead Magnets, special offers with course promotions, book tour events, partnerships and bulk orders and more. Having a clear content marketing and sales plan for your book is essential if you want to maximise the value you can gain from it, over time. Check out our Marketing Packages if you need help with this.
2. Understand your analytics. Likes, Followers, Engagement, Comments are useful metrics but you want to convert people to sell books/courses/your business offering, speaking engagements. You need to track all these and tweak your content to deliver what generates more conversions.
3. Make your website (or build one) your primary tool to sell your books and build engagement. Use social media platforms and LinkedIn as a way to engage…then convert them in some way: a newsletter, course, special book promotion, subscription. This is how you turn a book sale into potentially a new client, speaking booking, grow your course, build partnerships and more.
4. Create or revise your book budget and schedule for 2025. What worked in 2024 might not work in 2025 and you need to know what didn’t work in 2024 so you can regroup and reset. A book without a plan means lost opportunities to sell your book, increase your profile/brand, develop recognition as a thought-leader and more.

5 things to know
1. Taylor Swift self-published her book…. What this says about traditional publishing is that people who have built an audience for themselves, can make it work for them. You know your audience better than anybody else, you are able to self-publish content, engage and reach your audience and achieve whatever your primary goals are. It’s about owning your content and the distribution methods to get it to market. You are more engaged and keep more of the money. Taylor Swift Eras Tour Book
2. Harper Collins is going to allow tech firms to use its books to train AI models. Some nonfiction backlist titles will be used to train artificial intelligence with authors’ permission and some payment. CLICK HERE
3. Scams in self-publishing are growing. Over the past month I’ve been inundated with scam Facebook promos for all aspects of writing and self-publishing AND saved a former client from signing with a dodgy operator,
Writer Beware CLICK HERE is a great site to check before you sign as is Reddit.
4. Instagram has begun notifying users the following hashtags feature will end as early as mid-December. Users will no longer be able to follow a hashtag and have content using that hashtag show up in their main feed. Hashtags will still work in Insta’s explore and other features.
5. LinkedIn has now embedded AI so it’s not worth using hashtags. So what you need to do is write useful, relevant content over time (and of course use appropriate keywords/phrases).
